Brando earned a reputation as a ‘Bad Boy’ for his public outbursts and antics. Brando had no code, only his instincts. He was the gangster leader and the outla

. He was antisocial because he knew Society was crap; he was a hero to youth because he was strong enough not to take the crap.

At the 1973 Academy Awards, Brando refused to accept the Oscar for his performance in ‘The Godfather’. Sacheen Littlefeather represented him.

She appeared in Apache attire and stated that owing to the ‘poor treatment of Native Americans in the film industry’, Brando would not accept the award.

Brando arrived overweight and underprepared for the role of the vicious Colonel Kurtz. The production was shut down for a week while Coppola read Brando the script.

‘Nine-hundred people, the cast and crew, just sat and waited!’ Upon release, ‘Apocalypse Now’ earned critical acclaim, as did Brando’s performance.

His whispering of Kurtz’s final words ‘The horror! The horror!’, have become particularly famous.

I’ve seen horrors … horrors that you’ve seen. But you have no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that … but you have no right to judge me. It’s impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror … Horror has a face … and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies!

Brando was also considered a male sex symbol. He was an early lesbian icon.

He was known for his tumultuous personal life and his large number of partners and children.

He was the father to 11 children, three of whom were adopted.

The filming of Mutiny on the Bounty affected Brando‘s life in a profound way, as he fell in Love with Tahiti and its people.

Brando personally selected a local Tahitian, Tarita, to play his Love in ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’. Tarita became his third wife on August 10, 1962.

She was 20 years old, 18 years younger than Brando, who was reportedly delighted by her naïveté.

The atoll of Teti’aroa was a special place for the Tahitian chiefs, as a place to entertain themselves with song, dance, fishing, and feasting.

It was a special place for the ariori to practice their custom of ha’apori’a, including eating to gain weight, and staying out of the sun to whiten their skin.

Plump and pale was a sign of well-being and prosperity for the ariori and chiefs.

In 1789, William Bligh is said to have been the first European to visit Teti’aroa while looking for early mutineers prior to the departure of HMS Bounty which eventually suffered a full mutiny.

In 1960, Brando discovered Teti’aroa while scouting filming locations for Mutiny on the Bounty. Brando hired a local fisherman to ferry him to Teti’aroa and eventually purchased the Teti’aroa’s islets.

Brando built a small village on Motu Onetahi in 1970. The village became a place for friends, family and scientists.

During his stay on the island he was often visited by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Following his death in 2004, the executors of the estate granted rights to Pacific Beachcomber SC, a Tahitian company that owns hotels throughout French Polynesia.

Construction of ‘The Brando Resort’ began in 2009. The buildings are made using materials that are of local or certified origin, renewable, or recycled.

In February 2014, it was announced that the building of ‘The Brando Resort’ had been finished. ‘The Brando Resort’ was officially opened for the public in July 2014.

‘The Brando Estate’ and eight of Brando‘s eleven children are involved in the project.
