He is best known for his motion picture portrayal of the classic DC comic book superhero Superman.
Christopher Reeve bought a 12-year-old American horse named Eastern Express.
On May 27, 1995 the horse made a refusal and Reeve fell forward off the horse, holding on to the reins and shattering his first and second vertebrae.
Paralyzed from the neck down Reeve decided to use his name to put focus on spinal cord injuries.

On October 10, 2004 went into cardiac arrest after receiving an antibiotic for an infection.
Eighteen hours later Reeve died, aged 52.
