2015-12-18 Fortaleza – Manaus

I had taken the overnight bus from Natal to Fortaleza. I had an empty row for myself, two seats together, had entered in my sleeping back and had tried to sleep, with reasonable success. The bus arrived at 05:30 hours in the morning; I was still very tired, picked up my backpack and searched for a quiet and shady bench on the bus terminal ground to rest or maybe even sleep. A little bit to the side of the covered area was a small green area with a bench underneath a tree. This was my place; I lay down on the bench with my head on the backpack and actually slept for three hours before the heat of the sun was getting too hot and I woke up.

Fortaleza

I had to get used to live now with the backpack, watch out for it all the time, sleep with it all the time and carry it around all the time. I left the bus terminal and walked just around the corner to the bus stop to catch the bus to the airport. Five minutes waiting and the bus arrived; thirty minutes’ drive and the bus arrived at the airport. The airport terminal of Fortaleza is smaller than the airport terminal of Manaus but seemed much busier. The two cities have more or less the same amount of population, seventh and fifth biggest cities of Brazil, both with a newly built world cup stadium and no football team in the Serie A.

Like in the airport of Manaus only half an hour internet was free and then you had to buy a plan through an operator. I was still pretty much behind with the work on the project Rio 2016; more than two weeks with my baby Matilda and I did not really have the time to continue working. I really had to focus now and catch up at every possible moment and location. I would have definitely more problems now with the backpack to find quickly suitable internet access to upload to the site. I bought a plan for six hours and started working. I had to spend some time during the next internet sessions as well to inquire about the next possible destinations. It was pretty clear and without option that I would take the boat from Manaus to Tabatinga but then I had several options from Tabatinga and each possibility needed analysis and preparation.

Fortaleza

The food court of the airport of Fortaleza had all the major restaurant chains of Brazil, the same chains that you would find in all the shopping malls of every city. My decision was an economic decision, Bobs Burger, the Hamburger Trio with refill for fifteen Reales, only this time here in Fortaleza without refill, instead I had a chocolate soft cream ice for just two Reales. Whenever there is a Bobs Burger or Mc Donald’s around I am going to have now a chocolate soft cream ice for two Reales; it is cheap, fresh and cold and stills a bit my thirst and a bit my hunger.

My flight was only at 22:30 hours and I still had the whole afternoon to catch up with the work on the projec Rio 2016. The first six hours had passed and I renewed the plan with the operator and had now internet access up to the time of my flight to Manaus. I was making progress and the queue of work had reduced a little bit but the time necessary to work on the pictures and the text required more than I expected. Time moved forward and the time had come now for check in and boarding. The plane arrived in Manaus on time just minutes after midnight and I went straight to the lower floor and to a bench in the corner of the arrival hall, took out my sleeping bag, put on my sun glasses and tried to sleep.
