Good Friday / Karfreitag / Sexta-feira Santa / Viernes Santo

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary.

The Seven Last Words from the Cross are seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. They are gathered from the four Canonical Gospels.

Three of the sayings appear only in the Gospel of Luke and three only in the Gospel of John. The other saying appears both in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark.

In Matthew and Mark, Jesus cries out to God. In Luke, he forgives his killers, reassures the penitent thief, and commends his spirit to the Father.

In John, he speaks to his mother, says he thirsts, and declares the end of his earthly life.

1. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do

2. Today you will be with me in paradise

3. Behold your son: behold your mother

4. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

5. I thirst

6. It is finished

7. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit

Christian doctrines include the beliefs that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of a virgin named Mary.

Performed miracles, founded the Church, died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to achieve atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven, whence he will return.

The great majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, the second of three persons of a Divine Trinity. Most Christians believe that Jesus was both Human and the Son of God.
