For centuries, Hindus from across India and beyond have been traveling to Varanasi, the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, to spend their last days in the 5,000-year-old city.

They believe dying there will release them from the cycle of life, death and reincarnation – and bring them salvation, making it a major centre for pilgrimage.

According to legend, Varanasi was founded by the god Shiva. In a fight between Brahma and Shiva, Shiva cut off one of the four heads of Brahma.

It was a custom that the victor carried the slain adversary’s head in his hand and when he came to the city of Varanasi the head of Brahma dropped from Shiva’s hand and disappeared in the ground.

Therefore Varanasi is considered an extremely holy religious site.
