If Earth’s history is compared to a calendar year, modern Human life has existed for 23 minutes and we have used one third of Earth’s natural resources in the last 0.2 seconds.

The environmental footprint is a measure of Human demand on the Earth‘s ecosystems. It says something about how many planet Earth‘s we need to support our way of life.

The population of the World today is about 200,000 people larger than yesterday. By 2025, population will be over 8 billion people. Around 2040 it could hit 9 billion and by 2100 it could reach a massive 11 billion people.

The World economy could grow a massive 26 times in this century. If all lived like western consumers we would need up to 5 planets to support us. And the number of consumers is growing by the second.

This development will put enormous pressure on Earth’s resources and we will need to find more sustainable ways of living. And fast!

Today we need 1.6 planets to provide the resources for our consumption and absorb our waste. Current overuse is due to our consumption of goods and services.

The extraction, production, distribution, use, and disposal of the stuff we buy. By the mid 2030’s we will need 2 planets.

In 2012 ‘Earth Overshoot Day’ was August 22 meaning that from this day humanity lives beyond the ecological capacity of planetEarth. Every year the day arrives a little earlier …

We are consuming the future.

If we do not start radically changing the way we consume the planet, we will be heading for a complete collapse of our consumer Society.

There is a need for a new industrial revolution where economic wealth goes hand-in-hand with environmental and social sustainability. And fast!
