{"id":20389,"date":"2019-07-31T01:42:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T01:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alexkaut.com\/?p=20389"},"modified":"2022-07-27T10:26:42","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T10:26:42","slug":"1944-07-31-ile-de-riou-france-the-little-prince","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alexkaut.com\/1944-07-31-ile-de-riou-france-the-little-prince\/","title":{"rendered":"1944-07-31 \u00cele de Riou, France \/ The little Prince \/ Der kleine Prinz \/ Le petit Prince \/ El Principito"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 30 December 1935, at 2:45\u00a0a.m., after 19 hours and 44 minutes in the air, Saint-Exup\u00e9ry, along with his mechanic-navigator Andr\u00e9 Pr\u00e9vot, crashed in the Libyan desert,<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTESchiff1996258_30-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> during an attempt to break the speed record in a Paris-to-Saigon air race and win a prize of 150,000\u00a0francs.<\/p>\n<p>Both Saint-Exup\u00e9ry and Pr\u00e9vot miraculously survived the crash, only to face rapid dehydration in the intense desert heat.<\/p>\n<p>Their maps were primitive and ambiguous, leaving them with no idea of their location.<\/p>\n<p>Lost among the sand dunes, their sole supplies were grapes, two oranges, a thermos of sweet coffee, chocolate, a handful of crackers, and a small ration of wine.<\/p>\n<p>They had only one day\u2019s worth of fluids. <sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTESchiff2006258_34-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>They both saw mirages and experienced hallucinations, which were quickly followed by more vivid hallucinations.<\/p>\n<p>By the second and third day, they were so dehydrated that they stopped sweating.
